Principles of Ergonomics (formerly OSHA #2250)

Course Description:

This course covers the use of ergonomic principles to recognize, evaluate, and control workplace conditions that cause or contribute to musculoskeletal and nerve disorders. Course topics include work physiology, anthropometry, musculoskeletal disorders, use of video display terminals, and risk factors such as vibration, temperature, material handling, repetition, and lifting and patient transfers in health care. Course emphasis is on industrial case studies covering analysis and design of work stations and equipment workshops in manual lifting, and coverage of current OSHA compliance policies and guidelines. Upon course completion students will have the ability to recognize work-related musculoskeletal and nerve disorders, assess employer s ergonomic programs, and conduct ergonomic evaluations. Minimum student contact hours: 18

Course Objectives:

Describe the impact of job and workplace design on employee safety and health
Identify workplace characteristics that may contribute to cumulative trauma disorders
List improvements in job, workstation, and equipment design that can reduce the potential for musculoskeletal injury
Analyze manual lifting tasks and estimate reasonable lifting limits.

Special Course Benefits:
Participants will conduct task analysis of actual videotaped jobs looking for musculoskeletal disorder risk factors.
Working as a team, participants will then apply the concepts presented in the class to develop effective control strategies for each job.
Note: Some math will be required; participants will need calculators with basic functions.

A cancellation fee equal to 25% will be assessed. Cancellation notification must be in writing (fax or email are acceptable) and received (not postmarked) 10 business days prior to the start date of the course. If the notice of cancellation is received 10 or more business days prior to the course start date, you may choose to send a substitute student or transfer to another course without penalty. If you choose to transfer to another course, you must take the course within six months of the original course date. After six months, the funds will be forfeited. You may only transfer your registration one time with approval. A $12 fee may be assessed.

If you must cancel your registration less than 10 business days prior to the course start date, you may choose to substitute a person. However, no transfers or refunds are available during this time period.

Registration fees are assessed in accordance with USF OTI Education Center cancellation rules. All fees are subject to change without prior notice. The USF OTI Education Center will make every effort to advertise any such changes if they occur.
