Disaster Site Worker Trainer Course

Course Description:

This course prepares experienced Outreach Training Program trainers to present OSHA #7600 Disaster Site Worker Course, intended for second responders (those arriving hours or days after the event). Course topics include the National Response Framework, the Incident Command System, disaster work zone safety, respiratory protection, communication issues, applying elements of successful adult training programs, and knowledge, skills, and attitudes to awareness training about safety and health standards at natural and human-made disaster sites. Students are provided the opportunity to practice knowledge and skills through discussion, planned exercises, demonstrations, and presentations. Lesson plans and training materials for the OSHA #7600 Disaster Site Worker Course are provided. Students who wish to participate as authorized Disaster Site Worker trainers must prepare a presentation on an assigned disaster site worker topic individually or as part of a group. Successful completion of this course authorized students to become trainers in the Disaster Site Worker Outreach Training Program, to conduct the OSHA #7600 Disaster Site Worker Course, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion. To be eligible to become an authorized Outreach trainer, a person must, at a minimum, meet the following three prerequisites:

  1. Be a current OSHA authorized Construction or General Industry Outreach trainer.
  2. Have a minimum of three years’ experience as an occupational safety and health trainer.
  3. One of the following:
    1. Have completed a 40-hour (minimum) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training course within the past five (5) years, or the 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher within the past 12 months.
    2. Possess journey-level credentials in a building trade union.

Experience cannot be substituted for the training prerequisite component. OSHA does not issue waivers for these prerequisites. After satisfying the prerequisites, a person must complete OSHA #5600 Disaster Site Worker Trainer Course to become an authorized trainer.

A copy of their Outreach Training Program trainer card for construction or general industry or an official transcript from their respective OSHA Training Institute Education Center showing successful completion of the OSHA #500 or OSHA #501 course, and a copy of their 40-hour HAZWOPER course completion certificate are required prior to the start of class to verify trainer status.

NOTE:  Outreach Training Program trainers are required to attend OSHA #5602 Update for Disaster Site Worker Trainer course at least every four (4) years to maintain their Outreach Training Program trainer authorization.

Prerequisite Policy:

The purpose of this policy is to inform students of the options regarding submission of prerequisite information.

All students participating in a Train-the-Trainer course are required to present prerequisites for verification prior to the beginning of the class for which they are scheduled or would like to attend.

Students are solely responsible for proving sufficient documentation by the Friday prior to the beginning of the course. The prerequisite information must be approved by noon (12:00 P.M.) on the Friday before the start of the course.

If the prerequisite form has not been approved by noon (12:00 P.M.) on the Friday before the start of the course, the student will be considered ineligible to attend the course and will be subject to the following:

If a student has registered and paid for the course, but the prerequisite for was not approved by the time stated above, the student’s registration will be cancelled, the tuition paid for the course will be refunded, and a 25% cancellation fee will be assessed.

If a student provides all of the prerequisite information and has been approved, but has not registered and paid for the course, the student has until lunch time (NOON) of the first day to submit payment to remain in the course.

No certificate or trainer cards will be issued without prerequisite submission and approval, and payment of course fees.

ABIH has previously awarded CM credit for this event. The current event contains 24 hours which can be claimed for CM credit. Rules and additional information for Event Providers is available at: American Board of Industrial Hygiene

Cancellation Policy:

A cancellation fee equal to 25% will be assessed. Cancellation notification must be in writing (fax or email are acceptable) and received (not postmarked) 10 business days prior to the start date of the course. If the notice of cancellation is received 10 or more business days prior to the course start date, you may choose to send a substitute student or transfer to another course without penalty. If you choose to transfer to another course, you must take the course within six months of the original course date. After six months, the funds will be forfeited. You may only transfer your registration one time with approval. A $12 fee may be assessed.

If you must cancel your registration less than 10 business days prior to the course start date, you may choose to substitute a person. However, no transfers or refunds are available during this time period.

If you register for a course during the 10-day window prior to the start date and you must cancel your registration, you may choose to substitute a person. No transfer or refunds are available during this time period.

Registration fees are assessed in accordance with USF OTI Education Center cancellation rules. All fees are subject to change without prior notice. The USF OTI Education Center will make every effort to advertise any such changes if they occur.
